The Luckin Link

During the course of researching our Family history. Both my Father and myself have had an enormous amount of good luck. This luck was to continue from the start right up to 2005 when we now have to move further afield in order to carry on the research. Every time that we went to the records office we would come up with some new facts . This luck was never greater than in 2004.
We had always wondered how Amos and Alice had come in to all the money that we ahve evidence that they had. In June 2004 I was asked by a customer to undertake some plumbing for her. Her name was Doreen Parish. I arrived at the allocated day and undertook the work. In the course of me finishing up she said to me that Carter was a good old Sussex name. I then went on to explain that I had done quite a bit of research into my family and how we were struggling to find out why Amos Carter and Alice Luckin had so much money.
She said that I did not mean Amos Carter. I replied that that was right. She then went on to explain that her Grandmother was A Fanny Luckin who was Alice's sister. So in effect we were related.

Fanny Luckin and her Children
Doreen was a real great source of information and filled in lots of Gaps around the family and its money matters.
Alice and Fanny Luckin were the daughters of a farm owner called Peter Luckin. Peter Luckin also had an illegitimate child called Elizabeth Luckin (nee Macklin) Bristow. The latter being the result of a relationship between Peter Luckin and Mary Macklin. When Peter Luckin died he left the farm and his estate to his three daughters. Doreen was kind enough to give me a copy of Peter Luckin's last will and testament. The testament goes on in some detail but all three daughters got the sum of £700.00 out of his estate. Both Alice and Fanny were adopted by John and Mary Wells. There are lots of names that keep on re turning up namely the surnames of Wells, Luckin, Bristow and Coleman. My father had Handed down to him a Bible that was given to Alice Luckin on the occasion of her marriage to Amos Carter.
On the inside of the Bible is a note written by the Rev Charles.W Napier Rector of Wiston. There is also the wedding list of Alice and Alice and alongside is the presents that people gave them and by whom. There is also a Family register that was filled out by my Fathers Aunt and subsequently completed by my father. All these pictures can be viewed at this link Family Bible.
